Japan held their yearly contest on Monday in which sumo wrestlers compete to make a baby cry the quickest.
In the Naki Sumo (crying baby) contest, if the head-to-head wailing infants cry simultaneously, then the one who cries loudest and longest is declared winner.
Eighty babies were eagerly given to the various sumo wrestlers at the Sensoji Temple in Tokyo. The mothers are enthusiastic to give the babies to the wrestlers as they believe the crying is beneficial for the child’s health.
Naki Sumo dates back approximately 400 years and looks to scare away ghosts and evil spirits. The event is the high point of spring, according to reports. The sumo wrestlers do not inflict any physical harm. Instead, they make faces and growl to elicit a crying response from the babies.
